What the heck is chemical etching?

Posted by Sean Andrus on Apr 25, 2018 10:00:00 AM

Wikipedia has a definition.  It is the subtractive manufacturing process of using baths of temperature-regulated etching chemicals to remove material to create an object with the desired shape. It is mostly used on metals... The process essentially involves bathing the cutting areas in a corrosive chemical .... Okay, enough of that! If you want to geek out some more, please feel free to learn everything you could possibly want to know by following the link above.  But what you probably really care about is whether this is the right process for your client’s request.

5 Pro Tips for Personalizing Steel

Posted by Sean Andrus on Apr 17, 2018 2:28:00 PM

Bob Shapiro, a 20+ year veteran in the metal industry, has great advice when personalizing steel.  The in-house metal nerd at Identification Plates suggests the following:

  1. Although it seems silly to have to say it, be sure to clean the surface before starting.  Oils, contaminates, and other imperfections will impair your finished product.
  2. When CO2 lasering, use a thermal marking solution (or spray) to achieve a black mark.
  3. For safety reasons, ask your supplier to properly deburr your order.  Nobody needs to get hurt.
  4. “Stainless” means exactly that, the metal stains less. It does not mean “Stainfree”.  A good example is the effect a lemon has when it is placed in a stainless steel sink overnight.  A thorough scrubbing will easily remove the stain it leaves.
  5. Be sure to discuss the end use with your customer.  Will it be inside?  Exposed to the elements? Does it need to be magnetic? When ordering from your supplier discuss their needs so they can advise on what grade of steel would be best (304, 316, or 430).
